Winter Clay Pigeon Shooting: Staying Warm And Comfortable

clay pigeon shooting bristolClay pigeon shooting at our Bristol range is an activity you can enjoy all year round, but the outdoor environment can be more challenging in the winter. This is never more true than now, when the famously unpredictable British weather seems to be more crazy than ever: will we have gales, snow, an unseasonal heatwave, or maybe just the inevitable rain?

Hopefully, when you arrive for your clay pigeon shooting experience, it will be a crisp clear day with bright blue skies and little fluffy clouds…but even if it isn’t, all of our shooting stands are covered so you won’t be completely exposed to the elements. However, to get the most out of the experience, you’ll want to be warm and comfortable. Here are some tips.

Dress for the weather

Our range is set amongst mature woodland so it’s reasonably sheltered, but you’ll still need to dress for the outdoors. In winter, light thermal layers are ideal. Start with a moisture wicking base layer and add a warm mid layer such as fleece or knitwear.

A waterproof and windproof outer layer will keep you protected from the elements, but avoid bulky padded jackets, because they will restrict your movement and make it more difficult to mount the gun correctly on your shoulder. Likewise, avoid loose items such as scarves because these can get caught up in the equipment.

Gloves are useful in cold weather, but they should not compromise your dexterity. Opt for gloves in a lightweight but grippy material so that you can operate the gun properly while keeping your hands warm.

A hat is useful, not only to prevent heat escaping from your head, but also to protect you from any stray fragments of clay. Remember that you will need to wear ear protection, so a close-fitting hat that is not too big or bulky is ideal. A peaked cap will provide extra protection from falling debris, as well as from the glare of low winter sun.

Footwear should be sturdy enough to cope with muddy ground, with good grips and waterproofing to keep you safe and dry.

Do a few warm up exercises

The muscles can get stiff in cold weather, particularly if you have had a long journey. Some simple shoulder rolls and arm rotations will help you to loosen up and boost the circulation. This will help you to stay warm, and also make it easier to manipulate the gun.

Pack a thermos

You’ll be welcomed to our grounds with a complementary cup of tea or coffee, but you may wish to bring a thermos so you can stay hydrated with warm drinks throughout the shoot.

Being outdoors in winter has a unique charm, no matter what the crazy old weather is doing. So long as you are dressed for the weather you will love the camaraderie with your teammates and welcoming atmosphere. Our instructors will make sure that you stay safe and have a fun and rewarding winter experience.
