5 Frequently Asked Questions About Clay Pigeon Shooting

clay pigeon shooting range in BristolYour first visit to our clay pigeon shooting range in Bristol will no doubt be an exciting and rewarding experience, but it’s likely that you have a few questions or perhaps you are just not sure what to expect. Here are some pointers to help you feel well prepared and ready to make the most of your time with us.

Why is it called clay pigeon shooting?

The name derives from the origins of the practice when live birds were released from traps to provide target practice. This practice was outlawed for the obvious reasons of protecting avian welfare in the 19th century, and live birds were replaced with glass balls. Eventually, the targets evolved into clay discs which provided a better trajectory.

The clay targets vary in size and colour, depending on the speed, trajectory and degree of visibility required. The targets are fired out of automated clay traps that are operated remotely for reasons of safety and efficiency.

What type of guns are used for clay pigeon shooting?

A type of double-barrelled shotgun will be provided for most participants, with junior versions available for youngsters or more slightly built visitors. The shotguns will deliver multiple small lead shots that spread out, making it easier to hit a rapidly moving target.

What safety protocols are in place?

The firing of live ammunition obviously carries a degree of risk, so you will receive a comprehensive safety briefing before you start. The venue is subject to strict firearms licensing laws

The instructor will provide you with basic safety instructions such as keeping the shotgun pointed away from others at all times, and always wearing the provided personal protective equipment, including ear defenders and safety glasses. Shotgun noise is approximately 150 decibels, enough to cause hearing damage, so protection should be used at all times.

Safety glasses will be provided to protect your eyes from any stray pieces of broken clay that may be blown into the shooting area.

How do you fire at a clay pigeon?

Don’t worry too much about this before you arrive, because full training will be provided on the day. You will be shown the correct stance and posture for accurate shooting, and to help you absorb the recoil from the gun as it fires. This is important for best results, and also to avoid the reactive force of the gun causing bruising to the body or face.

What happens if you miss?

Your first few shots may miss their target, but don’t be discouraged—this is perfectly normal! Soon, you will learn to time the pulling of the trigger slightly ahead of the target to account for travel time. It does require a certain amount of focus and concentration, so if you are attending as part of a stag or hen party, it’s advisable to save alcoholic celebrations for later.

Remember, you are there to have fun, enjoy being outdoors, and to bond with fellow participants. Follow all the instructions carefully, and you will find this unique experience to be enjoyable and memorable.
